Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the oldest of the three daughters of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. Her father, a carnival barker, died as a young child, forcing her mother to support the family by working as an attendant and a cleaner. Ruth attended school, and grew up in poverty within Boston Massachusetts' tenement districts. The institution she was in within two years of her education in order to pursue a career as an actor. The path she chose was filled with challenges. After landing a gig at New York as a model for a detective magazine, she was unable to secure work on stage. Following a short stint as a club hat girl, she decided to return to her home in Massachusetts and leave her job. There, she made ends meet with her ushering duties throughout the day, and at night performing in the New England Repertory Company, her first regular acting gig. She also studied drama and eventually graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
